About

Hi, I am Fatema! I am an environmentalist and eco-feminist originally from India currently living in Amsterdam, Netherlands. In 2018, I founded NatureCentric, through which I am exploring practical ways to live in environmental and spiritual harmony with nature.

I believe that life is sentient and sacred and there is much we can learn from our non-human kin, be they deer, moss, fungii or earth worms. The more I learn about how things work, the more I find how much we don't know and don't understand yet. While our species engages in ecocidal activities across the globe, I also know that there is still time and hope for us to stop our destructive ways and reverse our actions. What we eat; how we move; what and how much we consume; how quickly we procreate; all of these things affect others around us and we in turn are affected by what others do.

I see myself as a bridge between the world of science and spirituality. My goal is to learn from people who have been living in harmony with their local nature for centuries and bring this knowledge to cities so that urban dwellers such as me can organize our life and activities in ways that will continue our support our existence on this planet. I call this paradigm NatureCentric, one that sees humans as a part of the intricate web of life and not as above. it.

EXPERIENCE

I am an environmental researcher and analyst with a varied background and experience in different sectors and types of organizations. I did my bachelors in Electronics Engineering in India and a masters degree in Industrial engineering and another masters in Environment and resource management.

I was active in sustainability from 2010 until 2020, working with businesses and NGOs in different sectors in the capacity of project management; consultant; researcher; and sustainability analyst. You can check out my education and work experience on Linkedin.

After all those years of work, I realized that we have all the tools and technology to reduce our environmental impact on our planet. Yet, there are invisible barriers to change. Digging deeper, I realized that the barriers are our mindset – how we view nature, as separate from us; as a resource to be exploited at worst and managed at best. Thus, according to me, we need a paradigm shift. In 2018, I set up a one person organization, Naturecentric, the goal of which is to find practical ways to live in environmental and spiritual harmony with nature. Within Naturecentric, I started researching food, specifically, the ideal diet for our individual and environmental health. The outcome of this was a brief document and practical workshops on plant based diets – where I shared the reasons why we all need to eat more whole, organic, plant based foods and I also gave cooking workshops.

I have also been a part of Cityplot Amsterdam since 2017, through which I have given workshops on using herbs and also cooking workshops. Recently, I have been busy researching 10 things each of us can do to reduce our environmental impact on the planet. This non-exhaustive and practical list is meant for individuals living in Amsterdam to help them reduce their individual environmental impact. Expected publication date is Q1 2021.

I also occasionally write blogs, poetry and experiment with art. Feel free to check out my written work on Medium and visual experimentation on Instagram.
